OBJKT: A Living Atelier

Description

OBJKT is a Singapore based studio specialising in manufacturing, designing and contracting within the realms of industrial design. In developing it’s graphic identity, we took interest in the studio’s philosophical approach towards furniture making. The meticulously crafted objects, as distinctly recognisable as they are, have the equal capacity of settling into everyday living spaces through functional means as chairs and pedestals, despite their non-prescriptive nature.

We took heed of this duality and the flexibility it brings by implementing an overarching graphic language which straddles the line between the Object (what can be seen) and the Objective (what cannot be seen). This idea is explored within the OBJKT logomark, consisting of five rather ambiguous characters whose meaning can be deciphered when collectively examined against their context. In some cases, this relates to the negative space surrounding them while in others, the ways in which shadows subtly highlight articulations when casted across embossed details.

With the users’ experience in mind, we introduced a responsive grid system that intuitively adapts to an extensive range of media formats, where visual information could be consolidated and presented within an intriguing yet consistently legible framework. The nominated colour palette is a deliberate exercise in restraint, limited only to various shades of grey. This allows the craft and materiality which goes behind every OBJKT piece to come to the forefront, making for a tactile and multidimensional reading of its product offerings.

OBJKT’s graphic identity reimagines a language that’s atypical of the overstimulating variety prevalent in contemporary visual milieu. It questions traditional notions of aesthetics by reassessing the hierarchical significance given to what is seen versus what is felt and how their coexistence may come about.
